Hurricane Music Team Earns 28 Nominations In Company's Inaugural Year
MusicNL has announced the nominations for its 2023 awards for artists and industry with Hurricane Music team and clients earning a total of 28 nominations in 19 categories. Hurricane Music was nominated for Outstanding Company of the Year, with co-owners Matt Dines and David Shears each earning their first nominations for Industry Professional of the Year. Matt followed up his 2022 Nomination for Producer of the Year with another nomination in the same category for his recent work with artists like Baraka, TXS RED, Summer Bennett, With Violet, Nerve Shack, among others. Both Rosemary Lawton and Hunter Madden were nominated for Side Musician of the Year, along with photographer Katelyn Forward for Volunteers of the Year and Kenny Purchase for Graphic Designer of the Year.
2023 has been a breakout year for Tanzanian-born singer songwriter Baraka Abayo, having released his debut EP Voicemail and earning placements on numerous official Spotify curated playlists including “Afro Indie” and “Cocoa Butter”. The EP was produced and mixed by Hurricane Music Co-Owner Matt Dines with mastering by Rob Kleiner in Los Angeles, CA (Avatar 2, Euphoria, Last of Us). Baraka also released a single “Thru & Thru” which was commissioned by the East Coast Music Hour on CBC and features ECMA winner Jing Xia on guzheng and backup vocals by Cristina Hernandez.
Jing Xia and her band XIA-3 earned a total of 7 nominations. Her ECMA Winning Album The Numinous Journey continues to earn industry recognition while XIA-3 are quickly turning heads as one of the most unique instrumental acts in Canada. The group are working on a full length album due out this fall.
This July, Hurricane Music artist management clients With Violet dropped a 3-song EP Saturday Nights In. The 5-piece alt-pop group mixes modern pop hooks with a retro lens and is a rising name on the east coast pop scene, with music that connects with a wide audience. The group recently shared the stage with Walk of the Earth and the Beaches at the Iceberg Alley Performance Tent in their hometown St. John’s, NL. Saturday Nights In was produced by the group, Matt Dines and David Shears of Hurricane Music, mixed by Peter MacDonald, and mastered by Rob Kleiner.
Fans of RocketRocketShip have long waited for the return of Tyrone MacNeil, who fronted the group from 2013-2017. This year he returned with Txs Red, an alt-country EP that will knock the dust off your boots with driving drums and bass supported by a host of bluegrass instruments. Txs Red released three songs produced, mixed, and mastered by Matt Dines of Hurricane Music.
Speaking of RocketRocketShip, founding member Paul Brake was the voice of the groups earlier, more punk leaning recordings. The Order Of The Precious Blood debuted with a secret, sold out ‘Blood Ceremony’ in 2022 and has quickly risen to the top of the local heavy music scene. Paul Brake confidently fronts the group which is composed of members of Slowpoke and Release The Hounds. The group supported their EP I No Longer Wish for Salvation with an Atlantic Canadian tour, quickly converting new followers to the fold.
MusicNL Awards will be held this October 21st in St. John's as part of the organizations annual Music Celebration Week.
