St. John’s based Tanzanian born singer/songwriter BARAKA announces the lead single off his upcoming EP, Voicemail.

Emerging singer/songwriter shares a message of hope and self love through new single “I Will Be There.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, Baraka found himself alone. Trapped inside his apartment in a foreign country, thousands of miles away from his family in Tanzania. The resulting stress and isolation sent him into a mental health spiral; there were days when he hardly left his room.

Through this darkness, he had that eureka moment that inspired the song “I Will Be There.” As a songwriter who primarily writes about relationships and other people, there was something so fulfilling for Baraka to write a song for himself. “I Will Be There” is an anthem of self love and a reminder that we all need to take the time to take care of ourselves and be there for ourselves. Whether it’s going for a walk, taking initiative to get help, listening to your favorite artist, or cooking yourself a meal, it’s important to take the time to look after your mental health and overall well-being.

Baraka’s hope is that this song will make people feel good, and inspire them to spread love and positivity through the world.

From his home base of St. John’s, NL, Baraka is a soulful singer/songwriter whose sound and spirit are sure to tug on the heartstrings of everyone who hears him sing. Originally hailing from the coastal city of Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania, Baraka has been performing and writing music since he was 14 years old. Having already made several notable appearances on media networks at provincial and national level such as the EastLink Community TV, Rogers Out of The Fog, CBC NL, and CBC Radio One; together with opening for some of the province’s premier musicians in Janet Cull and Kellie Loder, Baraka’s magnetic presence and energy has seen him gain popularity and recognition in the community as a world class act. Baraka is currently putting the final touches on his debut 5-Track EP with producer Matt Dines. Funded by MusicNL, the EP is set to release this spring and is the first step in setting up Baraka as one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most promising emerging talents.

Baraka has been a staple of the downtown St. John’s music scene since 2018 performing and entertaining crowds regularly. You can catch him nearly every weekend at venues such as Sláinte, The Black Sheep, The Salt House, Greensleeves, TJ’s Patio, and the Rec Room.
